CONSOL: Road safety in the ageing societies - CONcerns and SOLutions

CONSOL is a project co-funded by the European Commission – Directorate General for Mobility and Transport and will run 24 months until September 2013. Contributing partners from 8 European countries are working on an interdisciplinary approach on mobility behaviour and mobility needs of the growing group of older road users

CONSOL aims at advancing knowledge by:

  1. combining current knowledge on mobility and safety with newest evidence from basic research (e.g., gender studies, social gerontology & findings on health & functionality with age), while also
  2. covering elderly safety issues (e.g. single-pedestrian & non-crash public transport accidents)
  3. Best practice analysis and discussion of feasibility
  4. Analyses of the roles of the different relevant societal actors

The long-term result of CONSOL will be the enhancement of road safety within the European Union, especially for the elderly road users by:

  • understanding the roles and responsibilities of the different societal actors and
  • covering existing knowledge gaps in order to ensure that policy decisions are made on a solid ground.
  • As a short-term results the project will create new knowledge on
  • the safety of the heterogeneous group of older road users in different travel modes
  • the complex interplay of different societal actors around issues that have bearing on older road users’ safe mobility.
